If not for God…
Have you ever stopped to think - what if God didn’t exist in the world? Or what if God wasn’t the God we know, but the clockmaker who did just create us and then left us to sin with no saving grace?
It can be depressing - until we realize the truth. God does exist. And moreover, He fights for us. We deserve no second chances, but God has given us countless chances until we die.
This is something David was very aware of… and so he wrote a beautiful psalm about it.
If it had not been the Lord who was on our side… (v. 1)
It’s very specific, just in case anyone would misunderstood it. God is on our side. Not because of anything we’ve done, but because of everything he is.
He chose us. “even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him…” Ephesians 1:4
He rescues us. “He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.” Psalm 18:17
He loves us. “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.” 1 John 4:9
God is for us. Who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)
…then they would have swallowed us up alive (v. 3)
It changes the way we live when we hit reset, remembering what our default is.
And our default is forever lost in sin, deserving hell at the end of our days.
If it weren’t for God, we would still be a captive wretch to our warring desires within us, trying to do right but never able to on our own. (Romans 7:22-24)
If it weren’t for God, we’d have no hope in the world, not a people, and without peace every day of our miserable existence on earth . (Ephesians 2:13-17)
If it weren’t for God, where would you be?
Blessed be the Lord! (v. 6)
And so we bless him, as long as we live (Psalm 63:4).
Our mouths praise him will praise him with joyful lips (Psalm 63:5).
And our soul clings to him, to the one who upholds us with his right hand (Psalm 63:8).
It’s the most beautiful life we could have ever imagined. God knew what we needed and he brought us everything that is good and true.
He gave us everlasting life, even though it cost him everything.
So how could we not bless God every day of our lives, knowing that we are able to have fullness of life – always and forever thanks to him!
This verse is from the book of Psalms, a book of prayers of all kinds to our God.
