Journaling through Psalms | the God of justice and love
“For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord. By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses.” Psalm 33:4-7
If we ever doubted if we live in a world where God is present and with us, this psalm helps us realize the truth: He is still present. He loves righteousness and justice. The earth is full of his love. His word is upright and by his word were the heavens made. We may live in a world full of sin, but the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof (Psalm 24:1).
He loves righteousness and justice. (v. 5)
There are so many times when it’s easy to get jaded by things of the world and think that the power of darkness still has dominion.
But it does not.
Righteousness and justice still reign.
When Jesus was about to die, he said, “But this is your hour, and the power of darkness” (Luke 22:53) as he was taken away.
And then he showed the world the most selfless act ever seen and ensured that righteousness and justice remained.
Jesus showed the righteousness of God up until and through his death. And his death made sure that there was justice, that there was sacrifice made for the sins for which we committed (Hebrews 7:27).
Whether we take Jesus’s offer or not, justice will be served. God will not change the standard of righteousness and holiness.
But as Satan thought he won the war against humanity, God brought the unexpected: his love.
The earth is full of his steadfast love. (v. 5)
His love is everywhere. It gives us hope and a reason to live. We can wake up each morning knowing that the love of God is vibrantly alive that day and every day we draw breath.
God loves righteousness and justice and he found a way to uphold those while still giving us hope – in his love, he died for us.
His sacrifice shouts to the ends of the earth and to the recesses of where evil dwells that we are worth his love. We are made just in Him. And no amount of sin or darkness can overwhelm that.
We are safe in Him.
His word is upright and by his word were the heavens made. (v. 4, 6)
What’s more incredible is that we get to really know our God who saved us. We get to have a relationship with Him that is stronger than any other, one that lasts into eternity when we get to see him face to face.
Because we have the words of God.
By the word of God were the heavens created. And it is upright, completely trustworthy, not needing to be filtered or second-guessed for its validity.
His word tells us of his righteousness and justice, from the giving of his giving of the laws to the giving of his Son who fulfilled them.
And his word tells us of his unending and steadfast love, abundantly given to us without measure.
It’s easy to delight in words like that – ones from our Beloved that bring us closer to Him, the God who is always near and waiting for us to come near to Him.
This verse is from the book of Psalms, a book of prayers of all kinds to our God.
