Jesus was very plain about the meaning of his words:
“If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” John 8:46-47
There are several statements of Jesus that start with “Truly, I say to you.” For us who long for the truth, it’s beautiful. It doesn’t mean that sometimes the truth isn’t hard to hear. But we know that it is sure and steadfast, words on which we can build our full hope. But if we are not with God, his words bounce off of us - and our lives show that we don’t treat them with much respect because we don’t live by them. The second step is to do what God’s Word says. But the first step is to hear the word of God, treasuring every real truth that Jesus shares. So let’s see specifically what Jesus truly tells us...
