Our comfort in the shadows
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4
It may look different for each of us, but the valley of the shadow of death is real and oppressive and hopeless. We walk without knowing where we’re going or whether we’ll make it out of this valley.
We ask, “How long will it be for? How much darkness can I handle? How can there be anything but this?”
But instead, in God, our thoughts can be, “God knows how long this is for. He handles the darkness for He is far more powerful than it is. And God is always present even in the darkest moments, even in the shadows of death.”
This is a promise God gives us in Psalm 23 - no matter where we are, no matter how overwhelmed by evil we are tempted to be, God is present.
Evil may be near. But God is nearer.
And we are protected and guided.
With his rod and staff, the Shepherd both keeps us safe from the enemy and gently guides us, correcting our way.
It’s a comfort.
We know that God will always protect and that he will always guide.
And sometimes just knowing that is all we need to get through the valley.
He is the good Shepherd. He knows his own. And we know Him. (John 10:14).
